LAKE CHARLES – Reserve Christian player Eddren McCain dazzled the crowd at the high championship at the Cajundome in Lafayette on Saturday, scoring a game-high 24 points as his team went on to win the title 61-59, but his mother never had the chance to witness his sparkling performance.

His mother Cindy McCain, 39, of Houston died in a crash at 12:47 a.m. on the day of the game, after she lost control of her Dodge for unknown reasons on Interstate 10 east of Lake Charles and ran off the roadway into several trees.

She wore a seatbelt during the crash, but it wasn’t enough to protect her from the impact of the crash and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

McCain was undoubtedly shocked to learn of the tragedy shortly after his team took its third straight state championship.
