West St. John softball got a rough outing in their game against E.D. White on Thursday, falling 21-6 to the Lady Cardinals.
The loss puts the Lady Rams at 2-3 on the season as they head into this weekend’s final non-district tilt scheduled today at Ecole Classique.
“We’re coming along pretty well,” said WSJ head coach Brandon Dumas. “On the offensive side we do pretty well. Defensively we need to cut down on mental errors. That’s what let the game get out of hand on us against E.D. White. Mental mistakes.”
WSJ defended their still damp home field after this week’s thunderstorms drenched the region. But the Lady Rams put up a fight with Destani Comminie on the mound, taking her third loss of the year.
Comminie held E.D. White in check through five innings, allowing only a handful of hits while walking two.
“Destani has done really well for us,” said assistant coach Glenda Mattos. “We’re working on her speed, but she’s getting it down. This is her first year pitching. So she’s doing really well.”
Shardae Bradley led the Lady Rams in the effort, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs. Marissa Gorden also went 2-for-2 on the evening as the Lady Rams totaled 12 hits in five innings.
Today, the Lady Rams are set to travel to Metairie for their game against (0-5) Ecole. WSJ opens their district schedule with a home game against Ascension Catholic on Monday before hitting a road swing that takes them to St. John and East Iberville.
St. John holds the best record in district 9-1A with a 7-9 season record.
“One of the captains on the team,” said Dumas. “She’s a leader on and off the field and she’s been a starter for five years. She can, and I think has, played almost every position for us. Without a doubt one of the best players on the team.”
“Two tough back to back games,” Dumas said of his upcoming schedule against ASCH and St. John. “Wer’e going to need an all around good game coming up. That’s two fo the best of the best in class 1A. But we’re looking to compete. These girls are fighters. They work on it everyday.”
