LAPLACE – In the first meeting between Riverside and St. Charles, the Rebels set the tone in a windy wrap-up to the St. Charles Comet Classic Saturday.
Actually, it was Donny Terrio who set much of that tone, as he took the mound for Riverside and allowed four hits and three runs through six innings. He also was in on the first and final runs of the game as he advanced Remi Poirrier before a score in the top of the first with a shot past shortstop. In the top of the seventh, he was also clutch in a double steal situation that put the game out of reach when Jade Falgoust made it home after reaching on a long double to deep left field.
The win came on the heels of a double-header for Riverside, as they also picked up a 14-6 win against Ridgewood on Friday. Against the Comets, the Rebels went up fast with that opening run and got the bases loaded before starting pitcher Philip Sutton got out of the inning. SCC’s Alex Marse tied it up for SCC with a home run to open the bottom of the third. That seemed to spark the Comets as Jonathan Cancienne got on to base right afterward with a walk and a steal to put him at second. Jordan Millet gave SCC the lead with a sacrifice shot to center field that got Cancienne in to send it into the fourth 2-1.
Riverside answered quickly with a one out, double to left field by Porrier and base hits by Terrio and Keith Guidry. With that, the Rebels retook the lead and built on it with a big sixth and seventh innings to take an eight point lead before the game ended as dusk set in.
“These aren’t the same teams that met last year,” Riverside coach Steve Stropolo said. “A lot of key guys were seniors last season for both of us. But there’s depth there. There are younger guys that can get the job done and get it done well. We have a lot to work with with all these talented young kids around here.”
