LAPLACE – After capturing district championships in both the boys and girls division III soccer, St. Charles earned a pair of home games last week.
On Wednesday, the Lady Comets hosted Woodlawn in a rainy bi-district game where the SCC squad took a 1-0 lead on a score by Jessica Rausch, but the Lady Panthers came back with a pair of late second half goals to upset the home team in the final six minutes of play. SCC Lady Comet soccer ended the season with a 10-7 record, and swept E.D. White to capture the district championship.
But on the boys side, St. Charles junior Peter Lambert Oswald was the man of the hour in the Comets bi-district game Saturday, netting three of the Comet’s four goals in a shutout of the Cajuns.
His first came just seconds before the break after Country Day had held the home team off the scoreboard through the first half, despite a definite advantage for the Comets in time of possession and shots on goal. A Cajun defender was called for a penalty on Oswald after he pulled the Comet down in a cluster in front of the goal during an inbound. Oswald’s ensuing penalty kick was a sharp shot to the left of the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
The Comets picked right back up where they left off after the half, scoring early with a bouncing header by Oswald to take a 2-0 advantage. That went to 3-0 at the fifteenth minute mark in the second half when John Paul Abbate knocked one in, and to 4-0 when Oswald made it a hat trick with less than ten minutes left to play. Country Day had a flurry of offense in the final minutes, but the St. Charles defense and Comet keeper Cory Crowder recorded a save to maintain the shutout.
The Comets are now set to host the St. Martin’s Saints who are coming off of a 6-0 win over Houma Christian. The Saints are district runners-up to Newman
The win puts St. Charles’ boys squad at 8-5-3 on the year after going 7-0 through district play.
