Drugs may have been involved, say police officers

GARYVILLE – A third train accident in two months occurred Tuesday after a train hit the backside of a 1988 Buick Elektra.

According to Sgt. Conrad Baker of the St. John Parish Traffic Division, the driver of the Buick was not paying attention to the railroad crossing sign and the train’s whistle as she crossed the track at the intersection of Garyville Northern and Apple Street.

The driver, 20-year old Christina Maguire of Garyville, was traveling northbound on Garyville Northern when she crossed the track and was subsequently struck in the rear of the car.

Maguire and a passenger, Cortrell Williams, were transported to River Parishes Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Maguire was cited for failure to yield at a train crossing and driving while intoxicated.

Lt. Troy Cassioppi said that results of drug tests are pending and that officers do believe drugs were a factor in the collision, but it is not confirmed at this time.

Sgt Baker continues his investigation.
