HAHNVILLE- The St. Charles Parish Council last week elected to approve a bid for road construction on some high priority streets, with the bid going to Barriere Construction Company.
The original base bid amount for proposed road construction was $335,280 for four high priority roads. Birch Street, Schoolhouse Road, Clayton Street, and Whitley Road were all included in the base bid.
“The board also approved an alternate bid in addition to the base bid when it was suggested that work be done to repair damage resulting from hurricane debris removal after Hurricane Katrina,” said Gregory Bush, director of the Department of Public Works and Wastewater. The streets for the alternate bid will be patched and repaired and includes:
Duhe Drive, Smith Street, Cathy Drive, Ellington Avenue, Evangeline Street, Michael Drive, Patricia Court, Bayou Estates Drive, Edna Drive, Frickley Road, Lasso Lane, Lorraine Street, Bethune Street, Diamond Street, Evangeline Road (2), Marino Drive (3), West B. Street and Schmill Street. The cost for the additional bid is $130,530.
Another addition to the proposed project was added in the meeting when councilman Barry Minnich asked the board to approve the repaving of North Oak in Luling, which runs through his district for a cost $79,775 and was approved as a second alternate bid. The total cost of road construction in the area amounts to $545,585.
“Although the amount was over-budget the council chose to approve all bids,” said Bush.
The extra cost will be covered with the money from the sales tax revenue from the previous fiscal year.
