St. John schools plan opening events

RESERVE — Several St. John the Baptist Parish public schools have scheduled Back-to-School events for their students and parents in preparation of the 2006-2007 school year.
Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet
Pre-registration for students attending Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet will be held Aug. 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the school. Parents will be able to meet teachers and the school’s administrative team, turn in school supplies, sign and/or turn in necessary documents, and pick-up first homework assignments. All students in grades 1-8 will be assessed a $3 planner fee and a $10 lab fee.
John L. Ory Magnet
Students and parents of John L. Ory Magnet are invited to a “Meet the Teacher” night at the school on Aug. 8. Students whose last names begin with A-L should come for 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and students whose last names begin with M-Z should come for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All students attending John L. Ory Magnet are required to sign a contract with the school, agreeing to uphold its rules and policies, prior to beginning class on Aug. 10. Those contracts will be made available at the Aug. 8 meeting.
LaPlace Elementary School
LaPlace Elementary will host a Back-to-School Night on Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. School officials will give away door prizes, serve jambalaya to all participants, and make available free uniforms and free books for students. They also will provide school supply lists, uniform policy updates and this year’s summer reading assignments
Special guest speaker Dr. ?? Koenig will discuss “Smart Discipline Techniques” for parents.

Lake Pontchartrain Elementary
The Lake Pontchartrain Elementary PTO and Bull’s Corner Restaurant will sell school book bags at a reduced cost on July 29 for parents of public school students. The sale will be held outside the restaurant from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Prices for the bags range from $10 for clear bags, $12 for mesh bags, and $15 for roller bags. Parents will also be able to purchase spirit shirts and visors. All proceeds will go to the school’s PTO. Free uniforms will also be available.
The school will host a “Welcome to Lake Pontchartrain Elementary Meeting” on Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. The school principal will introduce the school’s administrative staff, teachers, aides and PTO officers, and go over student expectations, routines and procedures.
Then on Aug. 10, the school will have its 𔄙st Day Celebration.” Parents, grandparents and guardians are invited to enjoy a snack with their child at school and escort the child to his or her class on the first day. The school day runs from 8 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. at Lake Pontchartrain Elementary.
