Destrehan Spring Fest set May 27-28

DESTREHAN — Residents and visitors to the area will find a variety of fun activities at the Destrehan Plantation Spring into Summer on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 – 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend. Patterned after the award winning and highly successful Fall Festival in November, it will provide entertainment and shopping opportunities for all ages.
Over 100 arts and craft vendors from throughout Louisiana and the United States will be on hand to sell their hand crafted items including wood crafts, candles, clothes, art work, toys, dolls and furniture to name a few. The Mule Barn will feature over 25 Antiques and Collectibles vendors with furniture, collectibles and other items for sale.
The Cajun and Creole Food Area will be serving lots of Louisiana foods including seafood, beef brisket, sausage, jambalaya, and couchon de lait, as well as a variety of cakes, pies, brownies and other desserts.
Demonstrations of period crafts including open hearth cooking, bousillage‘, carpentry, indigo dyeing, candle-making and herbal remedies will be shown throughout the weekend. An exhibit on the 1811 Slave Revolt by noted local artist Lorraine Gendron will be on display.
All visitors to the festival will have an opportunity to view The Jefferson Room,
containing an original document signed by Thomas Jefferson, appointing Jean Noel Destrehan to he Orleans Territorial Council.
Tours of the plantation house will be available for an additional fee.
Musical entertainment will be a highlight of the festival. The schedule is as follows:
Saturday: Big Wheel Band, 1-5 p.m.
Sunday: Bucktown All-Stars, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Both days: Free Line Dance Lessons, 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Admission to the festival is $5 for adults and teens, free for ages 12 and under.
