While this past weekend was usually the one reserved for the annual high school showcase that pitted metro-area schools against each other on Zephyr Field, accomodating Tulane’s baseball team forced the tournament out of Metairie because the Green Wave are unable to use the Superdome. Instead, Destrehan and Hahnville got together to keep the spirit alive by hosting the Gerard Oubre Memorial Baseball Tornament.

Named for long-time Hahnville baseball fixture Gerard Oubre, whose son played for and coached the Tigers, the four-day tournament invited teams from Central Lafourche, Jesuit, Holy Cross and Brother Martin.

Play opened on Thursday last week at Destrehan High School with Jesuit beating Central Lafourche 5-3. Destrehan picked up a win in their game Friday against Brother Martin by a score of 3-1 thanks to some good defense and potent pitchers. But Saturday found the Fighting Wildcats going up against Jesuit, which is a re-match of last season’s 3A state championship game where DHS lost 8-2. They didn’t fare much better against the Blue Jays this weekend as they fell 5-2.

Hahnville won their match on Friday and Saturday against Holy Cross 6-4 and another one against Brother Martin on Saturday by the score of 8-3.

Hahnville returns to action this Friday when they travel into LaPlace to take on St. Charles in a non-district tilt.

Destrehan gets back to work on Saturday when they play host to John Ehret in a 5A match to open their district season.
