Two-truck accident kills two in LaPlace

LAPLACE — Two men died early Friday morning as a result of a head-on collision on Walnut Street in LaPlace, according to Louisiana State Police.

Trooper First Class Joseph Piglia reported that at 1:07 a.m., a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Mack Plaisance, 39, of Westwego, was traveling northbound on Airline Highway near Walnut Street.

A 2001 Ford pickup truck, driven by Edward Womble, 52, of Okeechobee, Fla., was traveling southoound on Airline near Walnut at the same time.

Trooper Piglia reported that for some unknown reason, the Chevrolet crossed into the southbound lanes, and struck the Ford head-on.

Both Plaisance and Womble suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation as of press time. It is also not known if alcohol or drugs were factors in the cause of the crash. Neither driver was wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. There were no other passengers.
