Terror on the midway

The normal fun and excitement at the St. John Andouille Festival took a scary turn for a few minutes on Saturday, when the Ferris wheel stopped to unload riders, only to have a young girl climb out of her seat halfway up the top. Fair-goers stopped what they were doing and gasped in amazement as they watched workers with the carnival rides slowly climb up the Ferris wheel and safely help the girl get down. Reports said the girl, 7-years-old, was riding with her brother and apparently decided to climb out when the Ferris wheel had stopped to start unloading riders. Fortunately she held onto the support arms until rescuers got her down, all to the applause of the shocked crowd at the fair. (Staff photos courtesy of Lisette Watkins)
