SORRENTO — Rodney Gremillion, of Vulcan Chemicals, presented River Parishes Community College Chancellor Joe Ben Welch today with a $5,000 check for the River Parishes Community College Foundation scholarship fund.

The money will be used to offset the expenses of deserving River Parishes Community College students in the coming semesters.

“I am grateful to Vulcan for this support,” said Welch. “Vulcan Chemicals has been one of our biggest supporters since we opened our doors six years ago. They have shown a consistent desire to support and fund higher education in the River Parishes area, and they have put their money where their mouth is.”

The River Parishes Community College Foundation awards partial scholarships to approximately 15 students each fall and spring semester.

Scholarships ranging in the amounts of $500, $375 or $250 are awarded by the Dean’s Scholarship Committee.

Only full-time students are eligible for the $500 scholarships.

Students taking between nine and 11 hours can receive a $375 scholarship and those enrolled in six to eight hours may be awarded the $250 scholarships. Students taking less than six hours are ineligible for Foundation scholarships.

River Parishes Community College is a two-year learning institution, fully-accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate Degrees.

The school is located at 7384 John LeBlanc Blvd. in Sorrento.
