LAPLACE-If you look up in the dictionary the phrase “must-win” it will say see St. Charles Catholic and Lutcher.

In a must-win game for the Comets, St. Charles Catholic boys squad came through when they absolutely needed to, defeating Lutcher 56-43.

Michael Troglen led the Comets with 21 points and Michael Coleman had 12 in the victory.

The win over the Bulldogs pushes the Comets to 11-15 on the season and more importantly back to .500 at 2-2 in district 10-3A play.

Comets Head Coach Jeff Montz was happy to see his team get back in the winning column.

“We did a good job of just settling down, especially after Lutcher got off to such a good start in the first quarter,” Montz said. “I felt that we finished the game well and that was a problem that we have been trying to overcome throughout the season. We played late in the game with a lot of confidence.

“I feel like my guys are capable of beating any team in this district. We know that we are going to need some help, but we are just going to take one game at a time and see where we end up when everything is over.

Blowing leads late in the throughout a tough losing streak, Montz said the difference in the game was his team’s ability to finally put a team away in the fourth quarter.

“We played better in the fourth quarter,” Montz said. “We kept our composure. That is what we need to continue to do if we want to be successful.”

Troglen continues to fuel the St. Charles Catholic offensive machine. However, Montz said he know that his complete team has to play well if they are to have any chance of continued success and have a shot to make the playoffs.

“Naturally we hope he will have a big night every night,” Montz said of his star player. “But we know that we are a team. We are not just Michael Troglen. We know that we have to rely on each other and sometimes other people have to step up.”

The Comets will look to put together a late-season winning streak with a return game against Donaldsville on Tuesday and then against E.D. White next Friday.
