LAPLACE – The St. John Parish Council on Tuesday named the persons to fill two slots on the St. John Housing Authority Board

Rev. Donald Brown, who lives in Reserve and currently serves on the board, was reappointed; and LaPlace resident Allen Smith will take the place of Kalantha Jackson of Reserve.

There are now five members on the board, who will be choosing their next executive director. This seat became vacant when former Executive Director Alice Crenshaw was fired two months ago.

Other nominees for the positions on the board were Walter Robiskie, submitted by Council members Cleveland Farlough and Lester Rainey, Jr.; and Albertine Etienne, submitted by Jaclyn Hotard.

The nomination by Farlough and Rainey was voted down; and Hotard’s nomination didn’t come to pass, since the two seats were already filled by the time the council got to her request.

Councilman Ronnie Smith had nominated Larry Synder, but withdrew the nomination when the agenda item first came up.

Farlough submitted the request for the reappointment of Rev. Brown, and Council Chairman Joel McTopy submitted Smith’s name for the remaining vacancy.

In past months, there had been much discussion by the board regarding the specific procedure to appoint the Housing Authority Board members. No such procedure has been developed yet, but the council wanted to move forward on Tuesday to complete the board, which sets policies and procedures for the Housing Authority.

An executive director has yet to be put in place.
