How often have you heard someone say, “When I was a kid, we never locked the door, and we slept with the windows open.”

The answer is, you have probably heard that statement many times, or perhaps have even said it.

Many things have changed for the better since the good ol’ days, but too often, personal and property security do not fit in that category.

We are no longer afforded the confidence that everyone is going to be honest and law abiding. Each year damage and loss from burglary in the United States amounts to millions of dollars.

Protecting your premises and personal belongings helps hold the line on insurer losses.

That directly affects the homeowner’s insurance rates we pay. Take a moment to review this home protection tip list. It may pay off in more ways than one.

1. Install dead bolt locks in all external doors (standard door locks and chains are too flimsy).

2. Secure sliding glass doors with a broom stick at the track base to jam the door.

3. Keep all windows locked.

4. Exterior doors should be metal or sturdy hardwood.

5. Lights are a crime deterrent. You need sufficient street lighting, and you might consider motion sensor lights (especially around back and side entrances).

6. Trim shrubbery that hides windows and doors.

7. Consider putting some lights on radio timers when you are away to give the appearance of occupancy.

8. Stop the mail and newspaper or have a neighbor to collect it when you are away.

9. If you are in a secluded area, consider a home security/alarm system.

10. Do not hide your house key in the standard places – under door mats or flower pots beside the door. (A trusted friend would be glad to keep an extra house key for you.)

11. If you live in a neighborhood situation, look out for one another. An effective neighborhood watch program is a great deterrent.
