Get High on Life had its beginning in early 1980. The purpose was to provide a service wherein individuals, schools, businesses and industries, which experienece drug-related problems, could seek information, assistance, guidance and counseling.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of ministering to many people in need. In many cases, some of the people needed to be detoxed before being admitted to in-house treatment centers.

In 1989, I heard about such a place in Bogalusa called Seven Acres Substance Abuse Center. It was started by Dr. Roger Casama and Dorothy Miller. Since then, I’ve directed many young men with illegal drug and alcohol problems to SASAC.

Many of the people I referred have gone on to a 28-day program at Fontainbleau Treatment Center in Mandeville and, upon completion, have lead drug-free, productive lives.

I thank God that Dr. Casama and Mrs. Miller, not only had a desire to help, but also a vision to provide a loving, caring place for people seeking a solution to their drug problems. Jean Bassett, M.S.W., is the program director. Jean has been a friend to me, but more importantly, a friend to many young men whose lives were out of control.

Since 1989, SASAC has assited 5,180 men. Last year alone, 480 young men found refuge a SASAC. The average stay is seven to 10 days. After than, they are prepared to enter a 28-day in-house program.

I would like to say that the drug problem has gotten better over the years, but it hasn’t. The only thing I can say is that without a place like SASAC and the people responsible for its operation, many young men would not have an opportunity to be turned on to a drug-free life. For everyone who was helped through SASAC, I say, “Thank God!”
