PHOTO: Angela Davis, “The Yarnspinner,” returns to St. John Parish for four children’s performances on July 26 and 27. The St. John the Baptist Parish Library will close out its summer reading program this year with Angela Davis, “The Yarnspinner,” as she gives four performances at various library locations. Davis will perform July 26 at 10 a.m. at LaPlace Elem-entary School and at 2 p.m. at the Garyville branch library. On July 27, she will perform at 10 a.m. at the Reserve branch library and her final performance is at 2 p.m. at the Edgard library branch. Children will participate in a fun-filled romp to the future on wheels, by rail and out of this world through fantastic stories, audience participation and creative imaginative experiences throughout the 45-minute session. A futuristic activity booklet designed to stimulate their imaginations will be provided to each child in attendance. Davis has been enchanting audiences for 14 years with her unique blend of storytelling and is a professional educator and a native New Orleanian. A much sought after storyteller, she travels extensively sharing her stories around the world and recently participated in the International Storytelling festival in Graz, Austria. Davis also received a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts to correlate Louis-iana standards and benchmarks to storytelling. The storytelling information compiled with five other Louis-iana storytellers gives activities using storytelling in every subject area to boost student achievement. When school begins in the fall, teachers, students and parents will be able to access www.storyfete.org. Davis says children will be definitely motivated to read books, but they have to attend the program and zip to the future to find out why they will love checking out books. Davis’ performances are funded by a grant from the Louisiana Decentralized Arts Funding program, administered by the Houma-Terre-bonne Arts and Humanities Council.
