Waterford plant nabs trespasser

TAFT – A Walker, La. truck driver scaled the security fence at Waterford 3 nuclear power plant May 17 and was arrested and charged with trespassing. Todd Newman, 38, from Walker, was driving his 18-wheeler to Dow-St. Charles Operations for a delivery of 50 gallon drums. At 5:40 a.m., he climbed a fence and entered on the westside of Waterford 3 protected security area. Newman was spotted by Waterford’s security cameras and the security guard asked him to halt. Newman did and was checked for weapons. None were found but the FBI was called as a precautionary measure. The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was called, and Newman was taken to the St. Charles Parish Department for questioning. Capt. Patrick Yoes said Newman has a history of mental illness and was on medication at the time of the incident. Newman’s behavior is related to his mental illness. He was charged with trespassing and Sheriff Greg C. Champagne added a felony charge of unauthorized entry of a business.
