Starting at noon today, the event is full of fun and festivities, all revolving around the raising of funds for the American Cancer Society and promoting cancer awareness. In the past the Relay for Life was a tri-parish project involving St. Charles, St. John and St. James parishes. Now the parishes hold their own events. “We wanted to bring cancer awareness into the community and hopefully get a better response,” said Denise St. Pierre, St. James Parish coordinator. Last year focusing on support from the St. James Parish community paid off. Forty-three teams comprised of 575 people strolled, walked or ran around the Lutcher High School track and raised $92,000 for cancer research. This year 48 teams with 601 members have signed up, to run until 4 a.m. tomorrow morning.
