SORRENTO – Education in the River Parishes just got a little more convenient as a result of cross-enrollment agreements signed recently at River Parishes Community College (RPCC). The agreements will allow students whoenroll at RPCC to take courses at the technical college campuses in Sorrento and Reserve, and those students enrolled at the technical college campuses in Sorrento and Reserve, and those students enrolled at the technical colleges to do the same at RPCC at no additional cost.

RPCC chancellor Dr. Joe Ben Welch and River Parishes and Ascension Campustechnical colleges director Dennis Murphy signed the agreement which takes effect in January. “This will be great for our students. They’ll be able to takeaccredited courses that are transferable and it’s affordable,” said Murphy.

Dr. Welch said these agreements will continue to expand as RPCC seeks toincrease postsecondary education throughout the River Parishes area. “Thisis a natural step for us as a community college.” Murphy said the newrelationship with RPCC will be especially helpful to his schools since it is difficult to find instructors with the right credentials to teach the academic classes students need, and then its sometimes difficult to make the classes.

He added that it is also convenient since the River Parishes campus is just 20 miles away and the Ascension campus is less than three miles away from the RPCC campus.

Under the agreement, a student will be eligible to take one course a the host institution for each course taken at the home at the home institution. Thosecourses include everything from English and math to physics and computer literacy. Students must meet all prerequisites for the courses approved forcross-enrollment. They may not enroll at the host institution for any courseoffered at the home institution during the same academic semester or quarter. RPCC signed a similar agreement with Southeastern LouisianaUniversity in Hammond earlier this year. That agreement took effect thisfall.
