TICKETS AVAILABLE – Tickets for the 2000 Nokia Sugar Bowl Prep Classic are now available at the participating schools, the Louisiana Superdome Box Office (by Gate A) and all TicketMaster locations or charge by phone at (504) 522-5555. Tickets are also available online at TicketMaster.com.Tickets are $10 for general admission (Plaza) and $11 reserved (Loge).
CLASSIC SCHEDULE – The 2000 Nokia Sugar Bowl Prep Classic kicks off in the Louisiana Superdome with the Class 2A championship game between Riverside and Ouachita Christian Friday at 5 p.m. The Class 3Achampionship game between Notre Dame of Crowley and Redemptorist follows at approximately 8 p.m.Saturday’s action begins at 1 p.m. with Southern Lab and Haynesvillesquaring off in the Class 1A title game. John Curtis and Salmen follow atapproximately 4 p.m. in the Class 4A championship game. And West Monroeand Shaw close out the Classic at approximately 7 p.m. with the Class 5Atitle on the line. Gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS – Both Riverside and Ouachita Christian are familiar with the Prep Classic. Riverside is making its third appearance inthe Class 2A state championship game under coach Mickey Roussel, falling to Haynesville, 48-17, in 1993 and to West St. John, 28-23, in 1998.Ouachita Christian is making its fourth appearance in the Classic. TheEagles are 2-1 in prior championship games, defeating University, 36-0, for the Class 1A title in 1985 and Oak Grove, 53-35, for the 1997 Class 2A championship. The 1997 title game is still the highest-scoring inClassic history. Ouachita Christian lost to Haynesville, 20-8, in the 1987Class 1A championship game.
The Rebels and Eagles are not alone in making return trips to the Superdome. West Monroe, Shaw, Curtis, Salmen, Haynesville and SouthernLab have all played in the Classic since 1995. Only the two Class 3Aparticipants, Notre Dame and Redemptorist, have not played in a prior Classic.
COMMON OPPONENTS – Ouachita Christian and Riverside had two foes in common this year – West St. John and Farmerville. Riverside defeatedWest St. John, 35-10, in District 9-2A play while Ouachita Christiandefeated the Rams, 43-6, in the Class 2A regionals.
The Eagles lost to Farmerville, 21-14, in the final District 2-2A game of the season while the Rebels upended the Farmers, 33-28, in the Class 2A semifinals last week.
