St. James falls to Winnfield

WINNFIELD – Andrew Smith tipped away Chris Hymel’s two-point conversionpass to Justin Aubert with 10 seconds left, preserving Winnfield’s 20-19victory over St. James in the Class 3A regionals Friday night.

Winnfield, the No. 2 seed in the state with an 12-0 record, advances to thequarterfinals to play Westlake. Westlake defeated Benton, 18-7, Fridaynight.

St. James finished its season at 6-5.

St. James had pulled to within 20-19 with 10 seconds left on Hymel’s 6-yardtouchdown pass to Davin Dennis.

Michael Harry gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 4-yardrun. Quentin Batiste added the extra point.

Winnfield came back in the third quarter with a 1-yard run by Zan Johnson.

Matt Shelton’s kick failed, leaving the score at 7-6.

Travell Steib made it 13-6 in the same quarter with a 7-yard run. DonavanWilliams was stopped on the two-point try, leaving it at 13-6.

Johnson thenwent 27 yards for Winnfield and Shelton added the extra point to tie thegame at 13 heading into the fourth quarter.

Johnson scored his third touchdown, on a 5-yard run, and Shelton added thedecisive extra point to make it 20-13 with 3:12 left in the game.

Johnson finished the game with 139 yards on 20 carries. Freddie King added63 yards on three carries.

St. James was led by Travell Steib who carried 16 times for 94 yards. Harryhad another 91 yards on 17 carries. Williams carried nine times for 39yards. Hymel completed 7-of-13 passes for 62 yards. Dennis caught fourpasses for 35 yards. Aubert had another two catches for 25 yards.
