Luminais signs golf scholarship with NSU

LAPLACE – Every golfer likes a long drive.
But it was a short drive that got Riverside’s Steve Luminais interested inNicholls State.
Luminais, who helped the Rebels capture the Class 2A state championshiplast spring, signed a golf Letter of Intent with Nicholls State Tuesday.
Luminais was the only player to be offered a golf scholarship by theColonels this year.
“It’s close to home,” Luminais said. “I can come home on weekends andplay with my friends here.”
Luminais said he has been told by the Nicholls State coaches that if shootsthe scores he did over the summer, he had a chance to be the fourth orfifth player on the team.
“I’ll be able to participate in tournaments as a freshman,” Luminais said.
“That’s what I wanted. I wanted to go to a smaller school and play more.”
Luminais helped Riverside win the state title this May at ShenandoahCountry Club in Baton Rouge. Luminais earned all-state honors by tying forninth at the state meet with a 157.
Luminais carried his success over to the summer schedule. He placed thirdat both the Louisiana Independent Insurance Agents and Gulf States PGAJunior Tour championships.
Luminais, a one-handicap, said he has to work on his mental game beforeheading to the next level.
“I know I can’t worry about one bad hole,” Luminais said. “I have to keepmy head in the game and stay away from high numbers.”
