WSJ overcomes Rams, closes season at Fisher

EDGARD – West St. John did a good job of bouncing back on all frontsFriday night against Redeemer-Seton.

First, it was the Rams answering an 85-yard touchdown pass from Redeemer’s Donald Allen to Arton Nelson on the first play of the game with an 89-yard kickoff return by Devin Herbert. Then it was West St. Johncoming back from an 12-8 deficit with 40 unanswered points in the second and third quarters on the way to a 56-20 victory.

The win overall was a nice comeback from a 35-10 loss to Riverside a week earlier and improved West St. John to 6-2 overall and 4-1 indistrict. It also kept the Rams alive in the District 9-2A race, a gamebehind Riverside and a half-game ahead of Newman.

West St. John went through the Redeemer offense for 439 yards. The Ramsdid it with a balanced attack, gaining 225 yards on the ground and 214 through the air. Herbert, in addition to his kickoff return, rushed for 100yards and three touchdowns. Darnell Landry and Bobby Poche addedtouchdowns on the ground. Randall Nicholson completed 7-of-9 passes for188 yards and one touchdown.

The defense allowed 294 yards but held Redeemer to 11 yards on the ground. The Rams also forced two turnovers.Fisher is coming off a 35-7 non-district loss at Grace King Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Gators to 1-7 overall. Fisher is 0-4 indistrict play.

Fisher has struggled offensively this season, scoring just 14 points in four district games and 45 points overall. Against the Fighting Irish, theGators gained 62 yards in offense, completing just 2-of-12 passes for 18 yards and an interception. Fisher also ran the ball 34 times for 44 yards, a1.29-yard average.Junior Ryan Bundy is the quarterback. In the backfield are sophomore ScottBlanda and junior Glen Maise. Senior Bobby Mayfield is the receiver andsenior Dale Martin the tight end. The line is an experienced one with fourseniors.

The defensive line is less experienced with end Edward Proctor the only senior. Gerard Victoriano and Chad Sanchez are the senior linebackers. Inthe secondary are senior Bobby Mayfield and junior Brian Cook.

West St. John jumped out to a 47-0 lead last year on its way to a 47-12victory over Fisher.

Friday’s game is the regular season finale for the Rams.
