ESJ faces old rivals

RESERVE – East St. John will see a familar face on an old rival Fridaynight when the Wildcats travel north to Neville.

Former Destrehan head coach Scott Martin is in his first year as head coach of the Tigers. Martin led the Wildcats to four straight district titlesfrom 1996-99, defeating East St. John each year. East St. John did defeatMartin’s Wildcats in his first year in 1995.

The Wildcats come into the non-district game with a 4-2 overall record after defeating Thibodaux, 28-0, Friday night. Neville, out of District 2-5A, is ranked 11th in the state after defeating West Ouachita, 44-21, last Thursday.

Friday’s game was the third shutout of the season for the East St. Johndefense. The Wildcats held Thibodaux to five first downs and 79 totalyards. The Tigers completed just 3-of-16 passes and were interceptedtwice.

Darwin Pittman and Raydel Patterson combined on two scores for the offense. Pittman finished with 151 yards on 10 of 27 passing. Pattersonhad four catches for 65 yards. Chuckie Burl had 17 carries for 109 yards.Tremaine Moore and Mervin Williams each added scores running the ball.

Neville is led by quarterback Robert Lane, one of the top quarterbacks in the state. Going into last Thursday’s game, Lane had completed 65 of 114passes for 934 yards and eight touchdowns while only being intercepted four times. His favorite target has been Toby Zeigler who has 18 catchesfor 383 yards and three scores. Senior Farlando Brown is the top back.On defense, the Tigers go out of the 4-3. Leading the charge up front aredefensive ends Dariul Williams and Ladarrion Mathis. The linebackingcorps is also solid with Donnel Cassey and Marcus McFarland.

Last year, East St. John rolled to a 45-21 victory at home. Burl had 143yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Roydell Williams added 10catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

Next week, East St. John returns to District 7-5A action with a road tripto Central Lafourche.
