The River Parish Tigers are holding a general membership meeting Monday at BBs in LaPlace.

Scheduled guest speakers are LSU basketball coach John Brady and women’s gymnastics coach D.D. Breaux, both of whom are coming offseasons in which their teams were nationally ranked.

A social will begin at 6 p.m., with the meal served at 6:45 p.m. prior to theguest speakers.

The cost is $5 for members, $3 for Tiger tykes 3-12, and $10 for non- members. Dues to join the River Parish Tigers are $15 for individual/$25for family membership. Proceeds go toward establishing a scholarshipprogram for local students.

The second annual St. John United Way Golf Classic will be heldMonday at Riverlands Country Club in LaPlace.

The tournament will have morning and afternoon rounds. The entry fee is$100 per person. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 each and teamsponsorships for $400.

The St. Charles Borromeo School Parents, Teachers and FriendsOrganization will sponsor its annual golf classic on Monday at Ormond Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament provide funding for schoolimprovements, curriculum enhancements, and growing technological needs.

Past proceeds have enabled the school to provide a state-of-the art technology lab including Internet connections, computer stations in every classroom, WeatherLink 4, Accelerated Reader and a newly “automated” library.

Sponsorship is available at the $100, $250, and corporate level. Theentrance fee to play is $400 per team or $100 per person, which includes mulligans, lunch between rounds, and a dinner during the awards ceremony.

Quality Machine Works, Inc., will hosts its third annual Benefit GolfClassic, Monday, Oct. 23, at Pelican Point Golf Club in Gonzales. Proceedsfrom the classic will be used to help purchase a van for Paulette Trosclair Remondet, a River Parishes resident who has been in a wheelchair since 1972.

The tournament will feature a 4-man scramble with a shotgun tee time beginning at noon. The entrance fee is $100 per player which includesgreen fees, range balls, shirt, two mulligans, unlimited refreshments, lunch and dinner. Awards will be presented to the top three teans as wellas other contests that will be held throughout the day. Hole sponsorshipsare also available for $100.

The St. Charles Humane Society is sponsoring its annual Howl-in-Onegolf tournament Monday, Oct. 30, at Ormond Country Club in Destrehan. Teetime is scheduled for noon.

The cost to enter is $60 per player. The fee will go toward purchasing staband ballistic vests for St. Charles Parish K-9 police dogs and humanecommunity programs. Sponsorships are also available at the followinglevels: Platinum ($1,000), Gold ($500), hole sponsors ($100) and team sponsors ($120). There will also be prizes for the tournament and a silentauction.

The format for the event is a two-person scramble with men and ladies divisions. Prizes will be awarded in each division. A grand prize of$10,000 will be awarded for a hole-in-one.

The Roberto Clemente All-Stars are now recruiting baseball players to participate in intensive six-day instructional camps to be held Dec. 26-31 in Miami and Phoenix.

The Arizona camp will be at the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs and the Florida camp will be at the former home of the USA National Team.

Both facilities feature several major league fields, batting cages and clubhouses.

The staff will include major league scouts and college coaches from Florida, Arkansas, Wake Forest, Florida International, Alabama-Huntsville, Rutgers and Georgia.

Information is also available at www.clementeallstars.com. The Junior Achievement Golf Sampler Card allows area golfers to drive the fairways at 12 of the local golf courses.

The Golf Sampler Card is $39 and entitles the cardholder to play a total of 49 rounds of golf among the participating courses – Audubon, Bayou Barriere, Colonial, Colonial Acres, Eastover, Ellendale, Lakewood, Oak Harbor, Ormond, Pinewood, Stonebridge and Timberlane. Supporters of thegold card will also receive a complimentary Junior Achievement golf towel. The card is valid from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2000.Proceeds from the Golf Sampler Card benefit Junior Achievement’s K-12 in-school free enterprise programs. This year alone, Junior Achievementand its 900 volunteers will teach more than 25,000 local students in over 140 schools about the relevance of education to the workplace and to prepare them for lifelong learning.

Special Olympics Louisiana’s new “Share the Victory” motor vehicle recycling program allows anyone in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction as the fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
