Bulldogs look to contain Mustangs’ Jacobs

LUTCHER – When the Lutcher coaches looked at the films of their next opponent, Assumption, they probably saw all they wanted to see of the Mustangs’ Brandon Jacobs.

Jacobs, a senior, is the leading rusher in Class 4A in the Baton Rouge area with 989 yards and 10 touchdowns on 120 carries. In a 28-7 victory overLutcher’s cross-parish rival St. James last week, Jacobs gained 226 yardsand three touchdowns on 35 attempts with 179 of the yards coming in the second half. It was the third time this season that Jacobs has rushed forover 200 yards.

Jacobs leads the Mustangs as they host Lutcher Friday night. Kickoff isscheduled for 7 p.m.Lutcher knows all about going against top running backs, having seen Walker’s Tyson Roy last week. Roy, the second-leading rusher in Class 4Ain the Baton Rouge area, burned the Bulldogs for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries in a 27-7 win Friday night. Roy had 112 yardsand both touchdowns in the second half.

The loss dropped Lutcher to 2-2 on the season. Assumption comes in witha 4-0 record.

Lutcher was held to 166 yards in the game and turned the ball over six times. Risley St. Germain completed 5-of-18 passes for 72 yards,including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Chris Johnson. The Bulldogs gainedanother 94 yards on the ground.

Roy accounted for much of the Walker offense. Walker finished with 257yards, 235 coming on the ground. Lutcher held the Wildcats to onecompletion in 10 attempts and intercepted three passes. The onecompletion was a 22-yard touchdown pass from Michael Dumiller to Lucien Weber.

Jacobs accounted for all of Assumption’s offense last week. The Mustangsfinished with 221 yards rushing but failed to complete any of its four passes. The Mustang defense held St. James to 196 yards and forced threeturnovers. Valentino Jones returned an interception 45 yards for thegame’s opening score.

In addition to Jacobs, the Assumption offense returns Herbert Washington at quarterback and Lance Johnson at tight end. Nicholas Burd and DonaldFleming are the receivers.

The defense is led by a line of Dante Cole, Tedrick Mills, Michael Hahn and Jason Green. Jones, Ryan Dennis, Michael Woods and O’Neal Mills head upthe linebacking corps.

Assumption defeated Lutcher, 31-7, last season. Jacobs led the way with212 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.

Lutcher opens District 9-3A play next week at St. Charles Catholic.
