Bergeron wins LGA Juniors

LAFAYETTE – Brett Bergeron of LaPlace defeated Dobson’s Chase Hemperley on the first playoff hole to win the 43rd Louisiana Golf Association’s Junior Amateur championship Friday at Les Vieux Chene Golf Course.
Michael Schoen Jr. of LaPlace was fourth while Reserve’s Steve Luminaisfinished eighth.
Bergeron shot a final round even-par 72 to make up a two-stroke deficit to Hemperley. He birdied the par-3 17th and parred the par-4 18th to forcethe playoff. Both golfers hit their second shots of the playoff hole, the18th, into the rough on the side of the green. Hemperley chipped to withinsix feet and three-putted for a double bogey. Bergeron hit his chip towithin eight feet and two-putted for a bogey for the win.
Bergeron shot a 2-under par 214 for the three-day tournament, opening with rounds of 70 and 72. Hemperley’s 214 included rounds of 69, 71 and74.
David Pollet of Baton Rouge was third with a 215, shooting a final round 75 after opening with rounds of 67 and 73 to tie Hemperley going into the final day.
Schoen was two shots back of Pollet with a one-over 217. Schoen finishedwith a 71 after opening with a 72 and a 74.
Luminais came back from an opening round 77 to shoot rounds of 71 and 73 to finish with a 5-over 221.
Chad Bailey of Lafayette was fifth with a 219, followed by Avery Vincent of New Iberia and Joshua Clements of Houma.
