LAPLACE – Melissa Vial, kennel master at the St. John Parish AnimalShelter, announced this week the quarantine at the shelter is over.

Due to an outbreak of the parvo virus last week in which two dogs died, Vial ordered the shelter closed to the public.

However, after receiving the parvo vaccine and inoculating all the dogs, Vial said, “We have not had any more cases of parvo, and the shelter is now open.”Parvo affects the lining of a dog’s stomach and intestines is usually fatal once the dog contracts the disease. It is also a highly contagious virus, and that is why Vial had to close the shelter for about a week.
