Alcantara wins opening matches at Qualifying

BATON ROUGE – Marcia Alcantara of LaPlace won her opening two matches at the Louisiana State Junior Qualifying Tournament held this weekend at Highland Road Park.

Alcantara, the fifth seed in the girls’ 14-year-old field, defeated Aimee Babin of Houma, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 16. She advances to play the secondseed, Margaret Spalitta of New Orleans, in the round of eight. Spalittadefeated Rebecca McKibben of Shreveport, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 16.

Alcantara opened the tournament Saturday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Baton Rouge’s Chandler Kleinpeter.

Alcantara also teamed with Abbey Angelle of Maurice to win the first round in the doubles’ tournament against Stephanie Dellocono and Adele Abboud of Baton Rouge, 6-1, 6-1.

Silvio Alcantara of LaPlace loss his second match to eighth-seeded Matthew Shoptaugh of Baton Rouge, 6-0, 6-4, in the round of 32 in the boys’ 14-year- old singles. Alcantara opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tyler Thompson ofHouma.

Destrehan’s Charlie Jones also dropped his match in the boys’ 12-year-old singles’ round of 32, falling to Monroe’s Zachary Taylor, the 16th seed, 6-1, 6-1. Jones won his first match, 6-1, 6-3, over Christian Harrison ofShreveport.
