DESTREHAN – Destrehan High School’s 75th graduation ceremonies were held May 19 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

Leading the Class of 2000 was valedictorian Rachel Walsh. The daughter ofGrant and Paula Walsh of Destrehan, Rachel is planning to attend Tulane University on a legislative scholarship and major in international relations.

While at Destrehan High School she was president for three years of Interact, treasurer of National Honor Society and active in Mu Alpha Theta, literary magazine, Foreign Language Club and Beta Club.

Rachel also earned awards at Literary Rally, school and parish science fairs, Young Authors Contest, American History Olympiad and Current Events League.

She also works eight to 16 hours per week as a tour guide at Destrehan Plantation and volunteers with the Heritage Education Program at the plantation.

Salutatorian Brooke Crocker, daughter of James and Rosalie Hauk of LaPlace and Lyle Crocker of California, likewise received a legislative scholarship to Tulane University, where she intends to major in communications.

While at Destrehan High School she was captain of the Desty Darling dance team and president for two years of Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Brooke was also active in talented drama, Beta Club, Interact, Foreign Language Club, yearbook staff, National Honor Society, school newspaper, Drama Club and prom committee.

She was also named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students, earned the Superintendent’s Award for Achievement and the Society of Women Engineers Award. At Louisiana Girls State she was elected lieutenant governor.She is also on the Louisiana All-State Spirit Team and danced at Super Bowl XXXI.

Brooke is also an instructor for beginner dancers for Johanna’s Jazz-in- Motion and an actress in the Eddie May Murder Mysteries. She volunteers at a localnursing center, tutors and worked for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Rounding out the Top Ten graduates were Callie Beard, Lacey Stockton, Matthew Gabler, Jodi Friedman, Heather Hernandez, Michelle Lucas, Derick Wenning and Rachael Terluin.
