Guidry thwarts UF rally

HOOVER, Ala. – Hahnville High School graduate Weylin Guidry shut down asixth-inning rally by Florida in LSU’s 9-6 victory in the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game Sunday afternoon at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

Guidry relieved Hunter Gomez in the top of the sixth with Florida runners on first and second and nobody out and the Tigers clinging to a 7-6 lead. Guidrygot Tim Olsen, who batted .529 with four runs batted in in the tournament tohit a ground ball to second baseman Mike Fontenot who turned the double play. Guidry then struck out Peter Nystrom for the third out.Guidry also pitched the seventh inning, striking out the side while issuing a walk. Brian Tallet pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.Guidry was making his 27th appearance of the season for the Tigers. He is 0-2 on the season with a team-best 3.00 earned run average and five saves togo with 41 strikeouts in 61 innings.

It was LSU’s first SEC Tournament championship since 1994. The Tigers (43-17) will host a Regional beginning Friday. LSU, the top seed, will play fourth-seeded Jackson State at 2 p.m.
