Belle Terre Country Club regularly donates to the community in a special way. High school tennisteams use its tennis courts for practice at no cost to the schools. And, for the past nine years, it hasbeen the location of the now annual Tennis Fun Day where tennis players pay to participate in a fun tournament and receive a T-shirt and lunch.

Natalie Tatje is the outgoing president of the local organization, now called River Parishes Chapter of the American Heart Association. Local residents working as the tennis committee this year included NatalieRobottom, Karen McGaff, Cindy Scioneaux, Sheryl Schoen and Diane Tatje. Giving support to thegroup that day were members of the River Parishes Board, Nelson Guidry, Emma Gilmore and Karen Coburn.

Putting on an event like this is largely made possible by the Fun Day’s major sponsors which this year included River Parishes Hospital; Entergy; Performance Marble & Tile; Belle Terre Country Club; Tri- Parish Trophies; Eliana DeFrancesch, clerk of court; Hibernia National Bank; Roussel Tire Service; Goodyear Car Care Center; River Parishes Surgical Associates, Drs. Charles McGaff, Jr. and WayneRobichaux; State Farm Insurance, Mike Williams; Dollar General, Gordon and Debbie Jeffcoat; Lafarge; Shannon’s Health and Fitness Center, Inc.; Aegis Associates, Michael St. Martin; and Wayne Jones, sheriff. Committee members work tirelessly at soliciting sponsors, which sponsors support the successof our River Parishes organization. Other major sponsors also include River Parishes Plumbing Supply,Inc.; Scioneaux, Inc., Land Improvement and Transport Contractor; Curtis Environmental Services, Inc.;Tatje Insurance & Financial Products; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Thomson; A. Foto Insurance; RobottomMortuary; River Parishes Travel Center; John Crum, DA; Millet Guidry Funeral Home; Drs. Siegel,Vorhofff & Rushing, APMC; Riverlands Ins. Agency, Inc.; Riverlands Surveying Company; RiverParishes Redi-Mix Inc.; McDonald’s, LaPlace; and Consolidated Health Plans, Inc. These sponsorswere also given credit by having their names printed on the back of the T-shirts tennis players received.

Enduring an impossible, windy day, tennis players made the most out it and completed the tournament.

Winners in the “A” group for first second and third were Karen Landeche, Jill Thevenot and Enid Poche, and in the same positions for the “B” group were Ellen Trosclair, Rhonda Rutledge and Sheree Grote.

A gala took place at Ormond Country Club the preceding week and many businesses around the parish gave silent auction items to benefit the American Heart Association. In this year 2000, the organizationhas raised $12,000. When Tatje first became president in 1997, $6000 was the top amount, so there ispride in these new numbers. Although Tatje is leaving her president’s post, she plans to continueworking for the Heart Association by doing the tennis tournaments.

The organization still needs volunteers from St. James and St. Charles Parishes as, previously mentioned,as it is going from the St. John Chapter to the River Parishes Chapter and there is work to be done.
