BATON ROUGE – Kinya Lennix capped her junior year with an honorable mention selection to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A all- State girls’ basketball team this week.
Lennix helped lead the Lady Cats to their fourth straight district title and regional playoff appearance during the 1999-2000 season. The juniorforward averaged 17 points per game during the season, one in which she scored her 2,000th career point.
Alana Beard of state champion Southwood was the Outstanding Player of the Year. Beard, a senior, averaged 24.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Hercoach, Steven McDowell, was the Coach of the Year, after leading the team to a 36-0 record and its fifth state title in six years.
Joining Beard on the first team were laGrange senior Stephanie Harmon, Ouachita freshman Chrissy Givens, Bonnabel senior Temeka Johnson and McDonogh junior Lakeitha Hampton.
The all-State boys’ team was led by Outstanding Player Corey Dean of Ruston. Dean, a junior, averaged 29.5 points per game during the season.Huntington’s Marvin Alexander was the Coach of the Year after leading his team to its first Top 28 appearance.
Dean was joined on the first team by Hammond senior Juemichael Young, Central senior Trey Guidry, Glen Oaks junior Jerminey Bennett and Ehret senior Brandon Vincent.
