RA’s Bergeron gets off to quick start

LAPLACE – Riverside’s Brett Bergeron had his short game working early Tuesday afternoon, scoring birdies on the first two holes on his way to a 1- under par 35 at Belle Terre Country Club.

Bergeron’s score helped the Rebels to a 158 and a second-place finish in the three-team match. Vandebilt Catholic was first with a 150 while Jesuit wasthird with a 176.

Michael Schoen added a 2-over 38 for the Rebels. Steve Luminais contributeda 3-over 39 while Leisl Hasbrouck had a 10-over 46.

Vandebilt Catholic was led by B.J. Antill, who had a 1-under 35 playing in thethird group. Brandon Henry added an even-par 36 while Jeff Bordelon had a 3-over 39 and Josh Clements a 4-over 40.

Austin Swift paced the Blue Jays with a 4-over 40. Kevin Poche had a 5-over41 while John Barr had a 9-over 45 and Andre Gros a 14-over 50.

Bergeron opened the match by hitting his second shot on the par-4 first hole from 100 yards out from the right rough to within three feet of the pin.

Bergeron rolled in the putt for a birdie.

The par-4 second hole was almost a repeat as Bergeron again placed his second shot to within three feet from 150 yards out, rolling in the putt to go 2-under.

Bergeron negotiated a downhill putt just past the hole on the par-3 third hole, tapping in for his par. He would go on to par the next four holes as well,including a remarkable save on the par 4 sixth hole. Bergeron had placed hissecond shot under the lip of the right greenside bunker. He then blasted overthe lip and up the slope to within three feet, rolling in the putt to salvage the par.

Schoen birdied the third hole and reached the back of the green with his second shot on the 517-yard, par-5 fourth hole. He just missed rolling in theputt from the fringe for an eagle as the ball stopped just short of the hole.

Schoen would tap in for his birdie.

Riverside next plays in the District 9-2A tournament at Belle Terre beginning Wednesday. A practice round will be held Wednesday with competitionbeginning at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
