Montz vaults into record books

RESERVE – Heather Montz literally vaulted into the Riverside track and field record books Friday afternoon at the Riverside Meet.

Montz cleared the bar at seven feet in the pole vault, setting both a school and stadium record. It topped the old mark of five feet set by Montzearlier this season.

Not a bad feat considering she just started competing in the events two weeks ago.

“I just decided to try it,” Montz, a junior, said of competing in the pole vault. “It was a big difference today. I held my hands higher so I could gethigher.”Montz’s first place finish helped the Lady Rebels place second in the meet with 151 points. Mount Carmel rallied late in the track events to takefirst with 163 points. Cabrini was third with 78 points, followed byRiverdale (44), Ridgewood (32), Fisher (27) and St. James (7).Montz’s teammate Jamie Scurlock placed second in the pole vault with a vault of 5-6.

Brandi Falgoust won the discus with a throw of 92-1.5. St. James’ AshtonGrant was third with a throw of 84-6 with Riverside’s Kelly Louque in fourth with her throw of 82-10.5. Louque was also second in the javelinwith a throw of 96-9.5. Nicole Lambert of Riverside was right behind witha throw of 96-5 with Grant placing sixth with her throw of 70-7.5.Heidi Richard added a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 30-11. Ridgewood’s Mandy Livaudais took first with her throw of 31-4.5. Riverside’s Jennifer Smith was fourth in both the high jump and triple jump with efforts of 4-6 and 30-1, respectively. Smith also placed sixthin the long jump with a jump of 14-0.5. Teammate Amie Graugnard wasfourth in the long jump with an effort of 14-1.5 while Rachel Branton wasfifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6.

In the track events, the Lady Rebels’ Jennifer Guidry placed first in the hurdles with a time of 17.54 seconds. Scurlock was third in 18.47. Guidryalso placed third in the 200 with a time of 28.82 with Montz right behindin fourth in 29.50.Kayla Perret was fourth in the 1600 meters with a time of 6:19.17.Teammate Lauren Lambert was third in 3200 with a time of 13:36.78. Shewas also fifth in the 1600 with a time of 6:25.47 and sixth in the 100 in13.90. Candace Perret placed fourth in the 100 in 13.70. Jamie Johnson ofthe Lady Rebels was third in the 800 in 2:34.19. Teammate AllisonZeringue was fourth with a time of 2:53. Kris Terrio came in fourth in the400 in 1:08.09. The Lady Rebels’ 400-meter relay team was first in 53.35, narrowlyedging Cabrini which came in at 53.37. The 800-meter team came in thirdin 1:53.58 behind Mt. Carmel and Cabrini. The 1600-meter team wassecond in 4:27.78, behind Mt. Carmel which came in at 4:19.46.
