Martin named state finalist for Wendy’s Heisman award

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic senior Marci Martin is used to being astate finalist, having pitched the Lady Comets to the Class 2A state championship in softball in 1998.

Now, less than two years later, Martin is again a state finalist, although this time it’s for her accomplishments both on and off the field.

Martin was selected as one of 1,020 state finalists in the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award program. She received a bronze medal as well as atrophy, an engraved picture frame, a Heisman T-shirt and a pin and patch at the 1999 Wendy’s High School Heisman State Awards Luncheon for Southern Louisiana held at the New Orleans Airport Hilton in Kenner Dec. 7. The featured speaker at the luncheon was New Orleans Saints quarterback Danny Wuerffel, winner of the 1996 Heisman Trophy while at the University of Florida. Martin attended the luncheon along with her parents,Mark and Raynette Martin; her grandparents, Ray and Barbara Zeringue and Bernice Martin; St. Charles Catholic head softball coach Teri Hruska andathletic director David Lowry.

Martin was one of 10 women and 10 men from the state to be named a state finalist. Other state finalists were DeRidder’s David Badger, Elton’sAllison Bruchhaus, H.L. Bourgeois’ Joey Dawson, Oak Forest’s Kayla Durnin,Delcambre’s Neely Falgout, Buras’ Mary Fisher, Mandeville’s Thomas Ford, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Lindsey Johns, Fisher’s Brooks Malone, Buras’ ThungHieu Nguyen, Teurlings Catholic’s Masharika Prejean, Slidell’s Devlyn Quinn, St. Martin’s Brent Smith, Ben Franklin’s Ta-Shina Williams and St.Thomas Aquinas’ Joshua White.

The Wendy’s High School Heisman program recognizes male and female high school seniors who excel in three categories: scholarship, community service and athletics. Students must have a B+ grade average andparticipate in one of the 31 sanctioned sports and be nominated by their principals.
