Defense paces Lady Cats to Classic title

RESERVE – A strong defensive effort helped East St. John wins its secondLady Rebels Classic title in three years with a 51-28 victory over Vandebilt Catholic in the championship game Wednes-day night at Riverside.

East St. John (15-5) held Vandebilt (10-4) scoreless in the first quarter,jumping out to a 18-0 lead. That lead grew to 20-0 before the LadyTerriers scored their first basket with five minutes left in the second quarter. East St. John led 30-12 at the break and 44-18 at the end of thethird quarter.

Kinya Lennix led the Lady Cats with 18 points. Ginina Louis added 12points and was named the tournament’s MVP after scoring 51 points in three games.

Louis had a game-high 20 points to help East St. John advance to the titlegame with a 52-42 victory over Albany Tuesday. Lennix added 15 pointsand Kavonna Reese contributed 13 as the Lady Cats built on a 29-26 lead at halftime.

East St. John had opened the tournament with a 73-55 victory over Welsh,the team that had defeated the Lady Cats in the semifinals of last year’s tournament, Monday.

Albany (14-5) went on to defeat host Riverside, 55-44, in the third-place game Wednesday. Jennifer Guidry had a game-high 21 points for the LadyRebels (4-7) while Crystal Rome added 18 points.

Vandebilt advanced to the title game with a 42-30 victory over Riverside Tuesday. Rome led the Lady Rebels with eight points while Wendy Reameschipped in with six points.

Welsh (8-8) defeated St. Charles Catholic, 59-38, in the fifth-place gameWednesday behind 13 points by Ashley Batiste and 10 points by Sara Johnson. Liz Dufresne paced St. Charles Catholic (5-14) with 17 points.Amy Bourgeois added eight points and Abby Howard six for the Lady Comets.

St. Charles Catholic rolled past Thibodaux, 62-49, Tuesday. Dufresne had ateam-high 23 points for the Lady Comets.

Marci Martin contributed 13 points and Bourgeois nine.
