WSJ wins district opener

EDGARD – Ireon Bethancourt had 12 points and Ciarra Borne added 11 to lead West St. John to a 45-32 victory over Buras in the District 9-2Aopener for both teams Tuesday night at West St. John.West St. John improved to 2-6 overall and 1-0 in district play. Buras fellto 1-7 and 0-1.

“I’m glad we started off with a win,” West St. John coach Lester Smithsaid. “We have a lot of work left and we are a real young team, but overallwe are playing better than we did last week.

West St. John took a 21-19 lead into halftime behind seven points byBethancourt and five points each by Borne and Jada Bethancourt.

Behind pressure by the defense, the Lady Rams built that lead to nine midway through the third quarter. After Borne took a steal in, JanelleMorris grabbed and another steal and found Bethancourt who knocked down a jumper from inside the paint. Borne grabbed another steal withBethancourt being fouled on a drive in, hitting both free throws to make it 29-20 with 3:45 left.

Buras pulled to within six late in the quarter but Kita Harry answered with a put back to make it 32-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Borneopened the quarter with another put back to make it a 10-point game.

West St. John began to pull away midway through the quarter behind theoutside shooting of Kimiko Gauthier. Gauthier hit a 3-pointer from theright side and following a rebound by Harry, swished a jumper from the same side to make it 40-28. A put back and a drive by Morris made it 45-30.

Dontrell Williams led Buras with 15 points.

West St. John hosts H.L. Bourgeois Monday night.
