Drug suspect caught after hiding in lake

LAPLACE – After two hours of hiding in the cold water of the lake in Riverland Estates, Nathaniel Mitchell III was finally captured by St. Johnthe Baptist Sheriff’s deputies and charged with resisting arrest.

According to Capt. Mike Tregre, deputies pulled over Mitchell’s car in the200 block of Elm Street around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, because there was anoutstanding narcotics arrest warrant out on him. Mitchell got out of thecar and then ran into the woods surrounding Elm St.

A short while later, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a resident of Riverland Estates saying there was someone in their back yard. Deputiessurrounded the area, and after almost two hours of surveillance they pulled back to Fifth Street.

Mitchell, who had been hiding in the lake that is in the center of Riverland Estates, apparently thought he was safe and came out of the water and was promptly arrested.

“He is now warm and drying out in jail,” said Tregre.

Mitchell, 21, 143 Boardwalk St. in LaPlace, has also been charged withdistribution of schedule II drugs and possession of marijuana.
