Locals head up all-district VB teams

LAPLACE – The River Parishes continued its success in volleyball this past season, sending five teams to the state tournament.

Those athletes who helped contribute to that success were rently honored by their respective districts.

In District 8-I, Hahnville’s Jackie Witmer was named the district MVP.

The senior outside hitter had 15 aces, 21 kills and 24 digs in district play.

Junior middle hitter Elizabeth Landry also made first team after recording seven aces, 12 digs and 31 kills in district. Freshman outside hitter FloraBrown and sophomore setter Lindsey Yochim were second team selections.

The district champion Destrehan Lady Cats placed three on the first-team all-district squad. Senior Erica Bierman made it at setter with 216assists and 87 aces. Kim Bierman joined Witmer at outside hitter with158 kills, 63 aces and 17 digs. Jessica Johnson was selected at middlehitter. Outside hitter Terri August and middle hitter Atina Porter weresecond team selections.

Rounding out the first team was East St. John’s Danielle Washington atoutside hitter. The Lady Cats also had middle hitter Takiyah Joseph andsetter Theresa Cambre make second team.

District 6-III champion St. Charles Catholic placed three on the first teamall-district squad, including district MVP Nicole Scontrino. Cristi Clementand Marci Martin also made the first team while Michelle Dearmitt was named the coach of the year. Sarah Weber was a second team selection forthe Lady Comets.

Lutcher’s Keondra Robertson was a first team selection after recording 89 kills, 72 blocks and 63 digs. The Lady Bullodgs also placed Candace Kellerand Toni Riley on the second team.

E.D. White’s Sarah Picou and Amanda Ray made the first team whileCarolyn Cavell, Jamie Cox and Dana Waguespack made second team.

Riverside, the District 6-IV champions, placed three members on the district first team including senior Jennifer Smith who was named the district MVP. Jennifer Guidry and Cassie St. Amant also were first teamselections while Amie Graugnard was named to the honorable mention team.

West St. John senior Kimiko Gauthier made the first team with seniorIreon Bethancourt an honorable mention selection.

Also named to the all-district team were Ridgewood senior Mindy Livaudais and sophomores Kristen DeCastro and Lauren Burke. Senior LaceyEnglish of Ridgewood was named to the honorable mention team.

Three members of the District 8-V runner-up Reserve Christian Lady Eagles were named to the all-district first team. Amber Schlesinger ledthe Lady Eagles with 128 kills and 36 blocks and was second with 34 aces.

Summer Vicknair led the team with an 84 percent serve-receive ratio and was second with 35 digs. Her 27 aces were third on the team. AngieTucker was a first-team selection after having a team-high 94 percent serving ratio.

Renee Delaneuville and Mary Venus were second team selection.

Delaneuville had a team-high 48 aces and had an 87 percent serving percentage on 236 serves. Venus was first on the team with 37 digs.Shelly Ford and Dunia Medina were honorable mention selections.
