Registration for the 1999-2000 St. John Parish Biddy Basketballseason will be held today from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie in LaPlace.

Registration is for boys basketball ages 7-13. Cut off age date is Sept. 1,1999. Child must be 7 years old by Sept. 1, 1999 to be elgible for play.Girls who make 14 years old after Sept. 1, 1999 are elgible to play. Everychild is required to have a birth certificate on file with the St. JohnRecreation Department.

Makeup registration will be held at the Parish Recreation Office Dec. 9,1999 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Lakeview Soccer Club, in conjunction with the Louisiana Soccer Association, will host a “Youth Module” level-coaching license course for coaches of under 6 and under 8 aged players.

The course is open to all coaches. The course will be conducted today from9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Delgado Community College in New Orleans. The costis $25 for coaches affiliated to the state association and $35 for those non-affiliated.

St. Charles Catholic High School baseball coach Frank Monicawill be holding a hitting camp over the Christmas holidays.

The camp, for kids 7-14, will be held at the high school Dec. 20-22 from 9a.m. to noon. The cost of the camp is $90 or $30 per day.For more information, contact Monica at 652-3029.

The AAU Baseball and Softball Program will conduct two evaluation camps in December in Brenham, Texas.

Camp dates are Dec. 11-12 for softball and Dec. 18-19 for baseball. Thecost of the camps is $85.

The camps are designed to aid and inform the athlete and their parents on what they need to do to take a higher step in baseball or softball. Eachcamp will include a seminar that will cover topics such as the academic side of college athletics, how to contact coaches, how to attain information that will aid in your search for a good college situation and where to go to be seen by college coaches and pro scouts.

The athletes will be put through skill tests and live scrimmages to determine their level of play. All players will receive an evaluation oftheir skills that includes the information derived at the camps and tips and information that may enhance their chances of advancing in their sport. Evaluations will be put into a catalog and sent to all collegebaseball and softball coaches along with all pro scouts in Texas and Louisiana.

The camps will be conducted by college coaches and pro scouts with many years of experience in evaluating the talents of athletes. The camps areopen to all high school age players, freshmen through seniors. For moreinformation, call Frank Dornier at 281-469-6721.

The Junior Achievement Golf Sampler Card allows area golfers to drive the fairways at 12 of the local golf courses.

The Golf Sampler Card is $39 and entitles the cardholder to play a total of 49 rounds of golf among the participating courses – Audubon, Bayou Barriere, Colonial, Colonial Acres, Eastover, Ellendale, Lakewood, Oak Harbor, Ormond, Pinewood, Stonebridge and Timberlane. Supporters of thegold card will also receive a complimentary Junior Achievement golf towel. The card is valid from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2000.Proceeds from the Golf Sampler Card benefit Junior Achievement’s K-12 in-school free enterprise programs. This year alone, Junior Achievementand its 900 volunteers will teach more than 25,000 local students in over 140 schools about the relevance of education to the workplace and to prepare them for lifelong learning.

For the 10th consecutive year, mall-based athletic specialty retailer Footaction USA is offering $100,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors. This year, Footaction will award at least 84 scholarships,including one at $10,000, one at $5,000, two at $2,500 and 80 at $1,000.

The deadline for applications is January 15, 2000.

Applicants are judged on the basis of financial need, class rank and standardized test scores and level of sports participation. A group of 300semifinalists will be selected by an independent administrator.

Semifinalists will be required to complete a more detailed application and submit additional information, including a 250-word essay.

Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction asthe fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
