E.D. White nips Lady Comets late

LAPLACE – Lauren Chauvin gave E.D. White the lead for good with a jumperwith two minutes left as the Cardinals rallied for a 43-38 victory over St.

Charles Catholic in the final game of the Wendy’s Lady Comets Classic Wednesday night.

E.D. White took two of three games in the tournament to improve to 4-2 onthe season. St. Charles Catholic fell to 1-6.Crescent City Baptist won the tournament on the basis of margin of victory after defeating Hahnville, 47-36, in the early game Wednesday.

E.D. White had rallied from a 35-20 deficit early in the fourth quarter totie the game at 35 on two free throws by Amy Pitre with 3:48 left. After atimeout by St. Charles Catholic, Pitre grabbed a steal and was fouled,hitting two free throws to put the Cardinals up by two with 3:20 left.

The Lady Comets tied the game with 2:15 remaining on two free throws by Linda Simon. On the Cardinals’ next possession, Chauvin grabbed a rebound,got the ball back and knocked down the jumper from the left side to give E.D. White a 39-37 lead. Pitre and hit four of six free throws down thestretch to seal the win.

Pitre led the Cardinals with 16 points. Chauvin contributed 10 pointswhile Sarah Picou added nine.

Liz Dufresne had a game-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead St. Charles Catholic. Simon tossed in seven points while Nicole Scontrinoadded six.

St. Charles Catholic took an early 4-0 lead as Amy Bourgeois took a passfrom Dufresne in for a layup. E.D. White got its first point of the game atthe 3:30 mark on a free throw by Picou and went ahead 5-4 with 1:08 left on a jumper by Pitre. A 3-pointer by Pitre gave the Cardinals an 8-4 leadat the end of the first quarter.

Dufresne pulled the Lady Comets to within 10-9 early in the second quarter on a 3-pointer from the top of the arc. Marci Martin followed twopossessions later by banking in a jumper, giving the Lady Comets an 11-10 lead with 5:53 left.

Aimee Bourgeois answered for E.D. White with a put back. A jumper fromthe right baseline increased the Cardinals’ lead to 19-13 before Scontrino hit one from the same spot to trim the deficit to four at the break.

St. Charles Catholic tied the game at 19 on a put back by Simon with 5:21left in the third. Dufresne then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give theLady Comets a 25-21 lead.

After E.D. White pulled to within two with 3:09 left on a baseline jumperby Alexis Morvant, Dufresne buried another 3 from the right corner to make it 30-25. Two free throws by Sarah Weber gave the Lady Cometstheir biggest lead at 32-26 before Chauvin hit a jumper to make it a four- point game heading into the final eight minutes.

A 3-pointer by Dufresne from the right corner made it 35-30 before Chauvin started the Cardinals’ comeback with a jumper from the right side.

E.D. White opened the tournament Monday with a victory over Crescent Citybefore falling to Hahnville Tuesday. St. Charles Catholic fell to Hahnvilleand Crescent City in its first two games of the tournament.

“I thought we did really well defensively,” Lady Comets coach Jeff Montz said of his team’s play in the tournament. “Played two good games. We gotinto foul trouble the last two games and it affected our game but we got to learn to play around that.”St. Charles Catholic starts play in the E.D. White Tournament Thursday.
