Lady Cats take eighth at Division I state meet

NEW ORLEANS – Destrehan’s Carolann Lambert placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, helping the Lady Cats to an eighth-place finish at the Division I state swim meet Saturday afternoon at the UNO Lakefront Arena Pool.
Destrehan finished with 130 points. Dominican, led by a record-settingperformance by Jaclyn Faulkner in the 50-yard freestyle, won its first state title with 335 points. Defending state champion Archbishop Chapellewas second with 294 points with Lafayette third with 208. St. Joseph’swas fourth with 176 points, followed by Mount Carmel (164), Mandeville (156) and Northshore (138). Caddo with 86 points and Blenk with 84capped the top 10. Hahnville finished tied with Covington for 14th placewith 45 points.
Lambert, a sophomore, improved on her time in the preliminaries by almost five seconds in the 200 freestyle, finishing in two minutes, 3.42seconds. Teammate Kim Offutt was seventh in 2:05.80. Sarah Marchand ofBlenk placed first in 1:55.07.Destrehan’s 200-yard freestyle relay team placed fifth, finishing in 1:49.36. The Lady Cats were later moved up to fourth after Mandeville’steam was disqualified. Hahnville’s team was first in the consolations andninth overall in 1:52.39. Dominican won the event in an All-Americanconsideration time of 1:41.16.The Lady Cats’ 200-yard medley relay team opened the meet by placing first in the consolations and ninth overall with a time of 2:01.95. Thattime was also the seventh-best tiem in the event. Hahnville was 11th in2:05.48. Chapelle took the title in an All-American consideration time of1:52.04.Destrehan’s Nicole Matherne placed 10th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.45. Lafayette’s Kendra Trahan was the statetitle in 2:10.74. Matherne also placed first in the consolations and ninth overall in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.22. Carol Bohnsack of Hahnville was 11th in 1:03.28.Mandeville’s Laura Jo Leininger was first in an AAC time of 57.46.Bohnsack later placed 11th in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.23. Chapelle’sEmily Heslin was first in 1:00.12.Erin Hulsey was 10th in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.92. Dominican’sFaulkner blew away the field, finishing in a pool and Louisiana High School Athletic Association record time of 23.45. That time also qualified her asan All-American.
Hulsey was 14th in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 1:00.41. Faulknercaptured her second title, finishing in an AAC time in 51.38. Offuttfollowed with an 11th-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:39.96. HannahMartin of West Monroe won the title in 5:08.84. Lacey Corso placed 15th inthe 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:20.15. Lafayette’s Trahan won thestate title in 1:08.33.The Destrehan 400-yard freestyle relay team closed the competition with an eighth-place time of 4:09.33. Hahnville was 16th in 4:38.44. Dominicanwrapped up the state title in an AAC time of 3:39.17, edging out Chapelle’sAAC time of 3:39.47.
