AMBER KELLER / L’Observateur / August 24, 1999

In case you haven’t noticed yet, I’ve come to realize in the short 16 and a half years I’ve spent on this earth that God likes to stretch us. The Webster’sdefinition of stretch is to extend fully, to extend forcibly beyond the adapted limits.

On Aug. 16 I began my senior year. Since that day it’s been nothing buthomework, tests, teachers and rules. After a summer of sleeping late and havingfun, I’m finding it hard to readjust. A friend of mine said God is just stretchingme. He’s refining me. To refine means to purify by removing unwantedsubstances, to improve.

Our human nature leads us to believe that there is nothing wrong with us. Whatwould need to be improved? Why would God need to refine us? Many people like to say, “Well I really am a good person.” God said that there’s no such thing.Romans 3:10 says, “There is no one righteous, not even one.” Romans 3:23 says,”For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The truth is that there is always something about us that needs to be changed.

Sometimes we just don’t understand why we have to be in certain situations.

Maybe God is just refining us. Psalm 115:3 says, “Our God is in heaven, he doeswhat ever pleases him.” Whatever the will of God is, is exactly what we need, whether we realize it at that moment or not.
