BABIN GONZALESLawrence Joseph Babin, 84, a native of Paulina and a resident of Gonzales, died Aug. 15. He was the husband of Bobbie Lee Burns Babinand father and father-in-law of Michael and Judy Poche Babin, Robert and Hazel Glenn Babin, Patrick “Ricky” and Nella Wood Babin, Vickie Babin Gaudet, Laurette Babin, Chris Blanchard, Patricia Babin, Terry Hogan and the late Jeanne Marie Babin.

He was also the son of the late Emile and Leonica Babin and was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was a St. James Parish schoolteacher, served as clerk of court from1940 to 1964, served as state senator from 1964 to 1968 and as registrar of voters from 1968 to 1972.

Services are today at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Gonzales, withinterment at Hope Haven Cemetery, Prairieville. Visitation starts at 8 a.m.BASSIL NEW ORLEANSKathryn Castrinos Bassil, 72, a native of New Orleans and resident of Destrehan for four years, died Aug. 10. She was the mother ofAntonia “Toni” Jennings, Helen Reaux and Demetri Bassil.

She was also the sister of Mary Leicher and Michael Castrinos.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 16 at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the HolyTrinity, New Orleans, with interment at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, NewOrleans.

BERGERON NAPOLEONVILLEEva Hidalgo Bergeron, 89, a native of Welcome and a resident of Napoleonville, died Aug. 14. She was the wife of the late SamW. Bergeron Sr. and mother of Yvette Winston and Sam Jr., Jan, Don andWilliam Bergeron.

She was also the daughter of the late Ullyses and Eulalic Melancon Hidalgo and sister of the late Catherine Bertaut, Rosalie Melancon, Helen Legendre and Eunice, Manuel, Ullyses, Emmett, Norman and Louis Hidalgo.

She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 17 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Napoleonville.CHARLES ST. JAMESQuincy “Sheweetee” Charles, 13, a native and resident of St.James, died Aug. 14. He was the son of Kenneth Whittington and SherylCharles and brother of Tinivia, Sade, Shardenisa, Naneceia, Kendall and Ken Charles and the late Jeremy Charles.

He was also the grandson of Joseph and Ruby Charles and Tolifield and Aldeen Whittington, and great-grandchild of Benjamin and Myrtle Treaudo and Joseph and Daisy Bobbler.

Services were held Aug. 16 at St. Luke Baptist Church, St. James, withinterment at the church cemetery.

CORTEZ LAPLACERoy J. Cortez, 57, a native of Wallace and a resident of LaPlacefor 42 years, died Aug. 15. He was the husband of Elaine Vicknair Cortez.He was also the son of Lovina Cortez and the late Ferdie Cortez and brother of Ferdie Jr., Calvin, Clarence, Morris, Richard, Vernice, Gilbertand Mary Cortez, the late Martha Waguespack and Selina, Bernice and Percy Cortez.

Services are today at noon in the chapel of Millet-Guidry Funeral Home, LaPlace, with interment at St. John Memorial Gardens, LaPlace. Visitationstarts at 10 a.m.Di GIOVANNI KENNER Marcel Di Giovanni Sr., 72, a native of New Orleans and residentof St. Rose for the past 46 years, died Aug. 15. He was the husband ofMarie Di Giovanni and father of Marcel Jr. and Richard Di Giovanni.He was also the son of the late Antonina Catalinotto and Biaggio Di Giovanni and brother of Lena Maggio, John Di Giovanni and the late James, Angelo and Joseph Di Giovanni.

Services are today at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help CatholicChurch, Kenner with interment at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.Visitation begins at 9 a.m.HAYDEL DESTREHANOctave Joseph Haydel Jr., 82, a native and resident ofDestrehan, died Aug. 14. He was the husband of Jane Roberts Haydel.He was also the son of the late Jean and Elvina Tregre Haydel and brother of Leah Cristina, Robert Haydel, the late Elta Miller, Hilda Hazard and Lester Sr. and Antoinette Haydel.Services were held Aug. 16 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church,Destrehan, with interment at the church mausoleum.

LUQUETTE VACHERIEJoycelyn Ann Luquette, 57, a native and resident of Vacherie, died Aug. 14. She was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Leona TroxclairLuquette and sister of Cynthia Birdsall.

She worked for the St. James Parish Council for 30 years.Services were held Aug. 17 at St. Phillip Catholic Church, Vacherie, withinterment at the church cemetery.

REMONDET LAPLACE Pauline Marie Cuti Remondet, 55, a native of Amite and a resident of LaPlace for 34 years, died Aug. 16. She was the wife ofMichael Remondet Sr. and mother of Michael Jr. and Brent Remondet.She was also the daughter of Catherine Genco Cuti and the late Dominick Cuti Sr. and sister of Nancy Brown and Mary, Dominick Jr. and Charles Cuti.She is also survived by one grandchild.

Services are today at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, LaPlace,with interment at Amite Memorial Gardens, Amite. Visitation starts at 9a.m.ROBICHAUX KENNERLawrence Robichaux Jr., 74, a native of Convent and a resident ofKenner, died Aug. 13. He was the husband of Mariah Milton Robichaux andfather of Gwendolyn Cockem, Sharon Ratcliff, Lawrence K. Robichaux, theRev. Rayfield Jackson and the late Charles and Sharon Robichaux.He was also the brother of Evelyn Henry.

He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 17 at Pilgrim Baptist Church, Kenner, withinterment at Providence Memorial Park Cemetery, Metairie.
