L’Observateur / April 19, 1999

It’s a goal and a pledge given our readers each and every edition – the best along the river. Last Saturday, the Louisiana Press Association agreed, andpresented L’Observateur Managing Editor Sandy Seal with the Sweepstakes Award for work done by the news staff published during 1998.

Combined with honors already earned by the advertising staff, L’Observateur was also honored as Newspaper of the Year.

All the honors and recognition by our peers, though, is not enough. We wantmore – the continued respect and support of the community we serve.

Congratulations to the news department for the honors achieved.

Congratulations, too, to the advertising department for its contributions toward the Newspaper of the Year award.

We keep it in mind, though, that our purpose is not to win awards, nor to bask in our own recognition. We are here to serve the people of the RiverParishes – to inform, to educate, to entertain.

To that purpose, we all work quite hard, but we also recognize we cannot do it alone. We need you, our readers and advertisers, now more than ever. Our accumulation of press association honors is built on the foundations laid by earlier staffers, and we always aim to do better every year. Thisyear is the most and the highest we’ve ever achieved in our many years of membership in the association.

It’s a heady sensation to be recognized by our peers for our hard work.

They recognize, better than anyone, what sweat, imagination and inspiration goes into producing every newspaper, magazine and special section.

But we cannot do more or better without you. Please – continue to give usyour ideas and support, and nothing can hold us back.
