Explorers honored at awards banquet

Explorer Post No. 15 was recently honored with Boy Scouts of America awards for two of its members, Destiny Dufrene and Gerald LeBorde.
Both members received Young American Awards for their excellence in leadership and community involvement. The awards ceremony was held inthe Ponchartrain Center in Kenner with more than 700 in attendance.
Sheriff Greg Champagne sponsored a table and the award winners, their parents and the adult Explorer advisors were there to celebrate their accomplishment.
Explorer Post No. 15 is a division of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’sDepartment and consists of youths, male and female, between the ages of 14 and 21, who are interested in law enforcement. The group meets at 7p.m. the first Thursday of every month at the FOP Hall located on RiverRoad in Destrehan.
The Post has been very active in community service, most recently assisting with the Council on Aging Mardi Gras Ball and the Sheriff’s Department Reserve Academy Graduation Ceremony.
The Explorers recently marched in the Luling and Des Allemands parades, and they plan to assist in the United Way Bridge Run in March. They alsohave an extensive training schedule in the works that includes visits from the F.B.I. and the Criminal Investigations Division of the Sheriff’sDepartment.
Other activities for 1999 include a Family Fun Day for members and their families and a camping trip.
