Maurepas pulls away in second quarter

RESERVE – Maurepas broke open a close game with a 23-2 run to open the second quarter to coast to a 83-26 victory over Reserve Christian Friday night.

Maurepas evened its record at 1-1 in District 13-B and improved to 11-16 overall. Reserve Christian dropped to 0-2 in district and 0-17 overall.Dashay Poche had a game-high 32 points for the Lady Wolves. JenaeVicknair added 15 points while Sha Oliver tossed in nine points.

Reserve Christian was led by Brooke Delaneuville with 11 points. ReneDelaneuville and Brittany Dufrene each chipped in with five points.

Reserve Christian hung with the Lady Wolves early, taking a 6-4 lead as Shirmonica Bernard drove in from midcourt. Maurepas went ahead to stayas Susan Covington buried a jumper from the right corner.

The Lady Eagles pulled to within 11-10 with 1:36 left in the first quarter on a 3-pointer from the left side by Brooke Delaneuville. Maurepasanswered with a 3-pointer by Elissa Balfantz and a layup by Poche to take a 16-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

Maurepas then pulled away, scoring on 13 of its first 15 possessions of the second quarter. During that run which lasted from 7:05 left to thetwo-minute mark, the Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Eagles 26-6. Twofactors keyed the run – the Lady Wolves’ press that caused nine turnovers and Maure-pas’ dominance inside the paint.

Poche scored the first six points of the run on four free throws and a put back. Delaneuville cut the deficit back to 10 by driving in from the leftside before Maurepas answered as Balfantz found Vicknair downcourt.

Poche scored inside and then on a put back. Vicknair followed with ajumper and a layup, making it 33-12 with 4:16 left.

Dufrene got the Lady Eagles back on the scoreboard by taking a pass from Hannan Stansberry inside. Oliver followed with a 3-pointer from the leftarc and Balfantz scored on a break to make it 40-14. Delaneuville scoredtwice on a jumper and a put back and Dufrene drove from the left side to make it 44-20 at the half.

Reserve Christian pulled to 47-24 early in the third quarter on a jumper by Rene Delaneuville and a put back by Amber Schlesinger. Schlesinger’sfield goal would be the Lady Eagles’ last of the game as the Lady Wolves went on a 17-0 run to end the third quarter. Poche had six points duringthe run.

Poche also had the first points of the fourth quarter, taking a pass from Vicknair inside. Free throws dominated the quarter with Rene Delaneuvilleputting the Lady Eagles back on the scoreboard by making the front end of a one-and-one with 3:03 left. Dufrene added another with 56 seconds left.Reserve Christian hosts Mount Hermon Friday at 6 p.m.
