Oberschmidt, Burgard named to All-Star volleyball team

BATON ROUGE – St. Charles Catholic’s Kristin Oberschmidt has beenselected to play for the East squad in tonight’s girls’ All-Star Volleyball game in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus.

The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.Oberschmidt helped lead St. Charles Catholic to the state semifinals in1997, the second time that the Lady Comets advanced to the semifinals in her four-year career. She led the team this season in kills, blocks and digswhile being named the River Parishes MVP.

The game will give Oberschmidt an opportunity to be reunited with her coach, Anne Marie Burgard, who will serve as the assistant coach of the East squad. Burgard coached the Lady Comets to six state tournamentappearances and three district titles before leaving recently to join her husband, Paul, who was named head football coach at Christian Life in Baton Rouge.

Each of the All-Star squads will consist of 12 players. One player on eachsquad was selected from each of the five divisions. The remaining sevenplayers were at-large selections from any division. Oberschmidt was anat-large selection from Division IV.

The match will be a best of five affair. The starting six players will playthe entire first game with the second game played entirely by the next six players. Free substitution will be allowed after the completion of thesecond game.

Joining Oberschmidt on the East squad are Slidell’s Lauren Cuyler, Ben Franklin’s Lee Charbonnet, Sacred Heart (New Orleans)’s Katherine Sins and Lindsay Ruckert, Ridgewood’s Suzie Mohr, Country Day’s Miriam Stassi, Mount Carmel’s Eva Voltier and Traci Thompson, Bonnabel’s April Marley, Mandeville’s Rebekah Boyd and Dominican’s Cherie Dessauer.

The squad will be coached by Mount Carmel’s Jay Jay Juan with Ben Franklin’s Jodee Pulizzano serving as the coordinator. Mount Carmel’sChristine Zimmer has been selected as the student manager, Belaire’s Haleh Samadnouri as the student trainer and Denham Springs’ Scott Arceneaux as the adult trainer.

Selected to the West squad were St. Joseph’s Kristine Kesse and AmyPanepinto, Sam Houston’s Kelly Cook, Parkview Baptist’s Rachel Vogt, Episcopal’s Camille Cassidy, Delcambre’s Hannah Falgout, St. ThomasMore’s Emilie Hollier, St. Martinville’s Nicole Mitchell, TeurlingsCatholic’s Stormy Badeaux, Morgan City’s Jamie Pennison, Vandebilt Catholic’s Anna Melancon and Breaux Bridge’s Kyla Ledet.

Head coach Renee Fontenot of Sam Houston High School will be assisted by Crystal Blatchley of Teurlings. Mary Cavell of E.D. White will serve ascoordinator and Shreveport’s Billy Bobo as the adult trainer. SamHouston’s Lori Browning was selected as student manager and Notre Dame’s Michelle Didier as student trainer.
